We used to try using these things when caravaning out to Rockfalls and with the loud exhausts and the constant static they were pretty much worthless and people spent more time saying "What?" and "Repeat that." than anything else. My advice is to stick with cell phones, but feel free to try those walkies; I threw mine out and have no intentions to buy another
