Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
This is a very thought provoking blog/article from Universe Today. It's a short read.
http://www.universetoday.com/2008/05/26/one-way-mission-to-mars-us-soldiers-will-go/
"Ruth says that getting the worlds militaries involved with something other than making war with each other could change humanity's future for the better."
What do you think about using military for one way exploration? The impact on our world like in the past great voyages on earth seems obvious.
There are a lot of great topics brought up in this blog. Check it out.

Re: Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
1 way? I don't know about that as most people would not want to leave their family and friends. It's not like they are going across country, they are leaving the earth lol.

Re: Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
I didn't read the article, but if there are soldiers that are willing to go on a mission like that, why not? Should they be forced to? Absolutly not.

Re: Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
exactly, if they want to go thats awesome and their names will be very well known, but i think it would be completely out of the question to force them

Re: Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
thats nuts... it is a once in a lifetime chance. Id love to see the earth from space and what not. But a 1 way trip would be out of the question, id still like to come back.

Re: Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
I've read about this before, they would most likely only select applicants who had very minimal family ties and responsibilities, such as single, no kids, possibly no parents, not in a powerful position in business or government, etc.

Re: Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
So, of course, I had a dream about this last night.
I was stuck on Mars in like this weird space station (but on mars, ya know), it was tall and tringular shaped, 3 levels. Top level ceiling and floor were glass, to let light down to the bottom levels. Second level was a loft for sleeping, and base level was basically a kitchen/lab thing.
I was with a few people, and our ship had landed a ways away from this place, but we had somehow made it to it. We were stuck there, and unsure about how to get back to earth.
Obviously I had no idea if we were there on a mission or something, so I spent my time wandering around the place (it was quite big) trying to figure out how we were going to survive, how we'd get fresh oxygen, how long of a power source we had, and how we were going to live in the cold/heat. I ended up lighting a gas stove (like a cooktop, like you'd find in a kitchen) for heat, but then realized it was burning our oxygen, and that's when I woke up in a panic. I realized that we must be able to get more stuff off of our ship, since we had gotten into this place somehow in the first place. This gave me a little comfort, for being stuck on a far away planet with little chance of ever leaving.
Mostly I was wondering how it'd feel to suffocate from running out of oxygen.
Good times!

Sounds about right. The single soldiers always get dimed out to do the bullshit. If they volunteer, that'd be cool, but if they forced anyone to do that I think that's bullshit.

Plants and trees are a great way to create oxygen. They feed on the Carbon Dioxide that we exhale and create oxygen that we inhale.

Your dream reminded me of that cheesy 80's sci-fi flick: Creature. i ran across it on Netflix Online a few weeks back. haha.
If they sent teams of soldiers to Mars with a plan to set up for colonizing (or a remote base/lab situation) and did it by volunteer I think that would be cool. That has happened many times in history without much hope of return.
The concept of using our mighty military resources for more than conflict and defense excites me. Especially coupled with cooperation from more countries. If our military expansion comes with greater non conflict gains, than our current path might not sting as much in terms of growth and costs.

Re: Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
I say they send people from death row. What do they have to lose?
Don't think about them hijacking the space ship and flying it into earth, that ruins my idea.

I dont know how much they would accomplish for research purposes, it would probubly be just a big waste of money to send someone who most likely doesnt give a shit.

Re: Soldiers on a One way Mission to Mars
I liked Sunshine, the gf hated it, she doesn't like sci-fi. too bad. Anyway, this is a cool idea. I approve of our military (or government, for that matter) doing anything that will advance humanity.
