A short block is just the lower end, a long block includes the head. It is going to take a long time to work up to 500 whp, just start with the basic mods and work your way up. You can get in the 12's pretty easily for under $1k. An exhaust, some porting, UICP, SAFC and a few other small things. Your clutch won't hold long at those levels, so plan on a clutch shortly after you do the basic's.
